Thousands of New Jersey homes and businesses are without power on Monday afternoon as strong winds gusting to 50 mph batter the state, with the most severe weather still ahead.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 16 of the state’s 21 counties through 7 p.m. Monday. A wind advisory is also in effect for most of the state.
The peak of the storms is expected to be between 5 and 11 p.m., the weather service said.
“The primary threat remains wind, however the threat for tornadoes is increasing,” the weather service said. “Scattered tree damage and power outages possible.”
The tornado watch covers every county in New Jersey except for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union.
