'Big Play' Darius Slay Announces Shocking NFL Career Move

Trending 3 hours ago

After 13 seasons in the NFL, Darius Slay has announced that there will be no more big plays from him on the field.

On Monday, the veteran cornerback, who previously played for the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, made the surprising decision to retire from professional football.

"Dear football, I wanna thank you for all that you have done for me," Slay wrote in his social media announcement. "I've been blessed to play the game I loved since I was five years old, for an amazing 13 years at the highest level. Football was my peace, my joy, my everything."

"This game put me in a position to help take care of my family and loved ones, and I'm forever grateful. It's hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me, and I'm ready to turn the page and start my new journey. To all my Big Play fans, I will always appreciate the love and support y'all have given to me. I couldn't have done it without you."

Slay was a six-time Pro Bowler and a one-time All-Pro during his NFL career. He won Super Bowl LIX as a starter with the Philadelphia Eagles to cap the 2024 season and finished as the NFL co-leader in interceptions in 2017 while with the Detroit Lions.

In 2025, he played in ten games and started nine with the Steelers before mutually parting ways with the team. He was then claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills but did not report to the team after informing them he was considering retirement. Buffalo would have retained his rights had he returned in 2026.
